Top international research on flint mines in Kiel Strange things were going on at Hotel Birke in Kiel. A high number of internationally-renowned researchers from many European countries came together for three days in June to discuss one of the most fascinating phenomena of European prehistory. The international workshop “Quarries and Mines in Social Context. Connecting Patterns of Change in Neolithic Cultural Landscapes”, provided an overview of different sites, regional and temporal similarities and differences, as well as developments in the field of flint mines, and the scholars discussed the results intensively. From the 8th to the 10th June 2022, Berit Eriksen from the subprojects F5 and B1, and Lynn Fisher from the University of Illinois, Springfield, held the workshop at the Hotel Birke. The idea for the workshop was conceptualised during the first part of Lynn Fisher’s time as a Mercator Fellow (subproject F5), and saw her return to complete her fellowship with the workshop itself (LINK) . The aim of the workshop was to collect new information from different regions and to gather international experts in this field of research in one place to discuss the phenomenon together. People used to mine flint for thousands of years. In Europe, the phenomenon of flint mines is particularly associated with Neolithic cultures. The early Neolithic cultures (from about 5500 BCE onwards) began digging deep shafts into the ground to reach the flint — the steel of the Stone Age. Then, in the late fifth and fourth millennia, this phenomenon boomed. People dug thousands of mine shafts in many regions of Europe. And the phenomenon persisted across the millennia that followed. Despite regional and temporal differences in intensity, flint was still mined and used until the metal ages (from about 2200 BCE onwards). The workshop was a great success, as the two organisers concluded. The staff from Hotel Birke took care of the researchers with coffee and cake, a good lunch, and an excellent dinner on Friday. This was the perfect way to finish off the three-day workshop, as the researchers enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere and summed up the workshop with each other.

Top international research on flint mines in Kiel

[caption id="attachment_9695" align="alignleft" width="450"]<img loading="lazy" src="https://zbsa.eu/wp-content/uploads/2022/07/vortrag_berit-eriksen.jpg" alt="B.

[caption id="attachment_9696" align="alignleft" width="450"] Group photo of the participants in front of the entrance to Hotel Birke (Photo: Kristina Hüntemeyer).[/caption]

Now the researchers have a few months to write up their exciting results. All contributions will be collected and published in the STPAS series.

["GET
