Collaborative Research Centre Scales of Transformation Granted!
The German Research Foundation (DFG) has approved funding, starting in July 2016, of the new Collaborative Research Centre ‘Scales of Transformation: Human-Environmental Interaction in Prehistoric and Archaic Societies’ (SFB 1266), which was requested by Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel, together with the ZBSA.
For up to 12 years, transitional processes of Late Palaeolithic to Iron Age societies will be studied in detail, tracked and compared, through 18 closely networked subprojects. Close collaboration between the humanities and natural sciences will play a crucial role.
The ZBSA is represented in the new SFB with four subprojects:
Pioneers of the North: Transitions and Transformations in Northern Europe evidenced by high-resolution datasets (c. 15000-9500 BCE) (Principal Investigator: B. V. Eriksen),
Transitions of Specialised Foragers ( c. 9500-5000 BCE) (PIs H. Lübke, U. Schmölcke, J. Meadows and S. Hartz (ALM)),
Social Dimensions of Technological Change (PIs B. V. Eriksen and CAU colleagues), and
Timescales of Change (PIs J. Meadows and T. Meier (CAU)).
The SFB 1266 budget will fund posts for post-docs and PhD students at ZBSA, and finance excavations and laboratory analyses.
