ZBSA continues excavations in Birka in 2016! Follow the blog!
From the 30th of May until the 17th of June 2016 the ZBSA (Dr. Sven Kalmring) is continuing the excavations at the UNESCO-world heritage site Birka in Lake Mälaren close to Stockholm in cooperation with the Arkeologiska forskningslaboratoriet at Stockholms university (Assoc. Prof. Lena Holmquist). This year the surveys of the trench from 2015 will be completed and the formerly open harbour area put into focus. Here we will enhance the trial trench from 1969 – which led to the discovery of stone box of the jetty in 1970/71 – and continue its excavation down to the present shoreline.
