Jene aus Stein aus der Zeit nach 1000 ist seit langem durch Ruinen bekannt, jene aus Holz ist demgegen\u00fcber erst in den letzten Jahrzehnten freigelegt worden, mit einem Schwerpunkt auf dem j\u00fcngeren ersten Jahrtausend n.Chr. Um prominente Beispiele aus Schweden zu nennen; die Holzbauweise begegnet in Upp\u00e5kra und Uppsala, Stein in Alsn\u00f6hus und Vadstena. An ma\u00dfgeblichen Geb\u00e4ude sind Hallen f\u00fcr Versammlungen, Kultgeb\u00e4ude (Kirchen) bzw. Wohngeb\u00e4ude benennbar. Bemerkenswerterweise k\u00f6nnen auch nicht-arch\u00e4ologische Quellen, schriftlich und bildlich, zur Rekonstruktion vormoderner Machtsitze und Architektur der Macht herangezogen werden, die reich an Details sind. Was Mittelosteuropa angeht, im vorliegenden Fall das Gro\u00dfm\u00e4hrische Reich (im wesentlichen f\u00fcr das 9. Jh.) und das fr\u00fchpiastische Polen (10. bis 13. Jh.), so liefert Arch\u00e4ologie die wesentlichen Anhaltspunkte f\u00fcr eine Rekonstruktion repr\u00e4sentativer Architektur. <br \/>Nord- und Mittelosteuropa verbindet miteinander, dass beide Regionen als Peripherie des mittel(west)europ\u00e4ischen Karolinger- bis Stauferreichs (751 bis zum 13. Jahrhundert) angesehen werden k\u00f6nnen. Und dies f\u00fchrt weiter zur Leitfrage: Architektur und Landschaft der Macht in Nord- und Mittelosteuropa (sp\u00e4tes 1. Jahrtausend bis 1300) \u2013 gab es eine eigenst\u00e4ndige Entwicklung oder einen sp\u00e4tantik-fr\u00e4nkischen Ideentransfer? Diese Frage hat Gewicht dadurch, dass westslawische und d\u00e4nische Delegationen an fr\u00e4nkischen und j\u00fcngeren Herrschaftssitzen (Pfalzen) empfangen wurden; die Architektur war ihnen also bekannt. <br \/>Im Buch wird kontinentale \u2018Pfalzenforschung\u2019 aus arch\u00e4ologischer und historischer Sicht hinzugezogen, um m\u00f6gliche Vorbilder f\u00fcr den Norden zu benennen, beispielsweise f\u00fcr Aachen und Ingelheim, aber es ist auch die Frage zu stellen, ob eigentlich jene Pfalzen eigenst\u00e4ndige Entwicklungen waren oder ihrerseits (sp\u00e4t)antikes Erbe aufgegriffen haben. Die Publikation greift noch weiter aus, indem auch Architekturtheorie sowie anders gelagerte repr\u00e4sentative Architektur (Befestigungsanlagen oder gro\u00dfe Grabh\u00fcgel) ins Auge gefasst werden. Die Ber\u00fccksichtigung von Altamerika und Altchina soll einem Eurozentrismus entgegenwirken. <br \/>Das folgende Buch, in dem erstmals ein breitgef\u00e4chertes Material f\u00fcr Nordeuropa, aber auch f\u00fcr weit dar\u00fcber hinaus zusammengef\u00fchrt wird, erhebt den Anspruch, f\u00fcr viele Jahre zu einem Standardwerk zu werden, und es ist gegen\u00fcber der Konferenz noch um einige Beitr\u00e4ge zu erg\u00e4nzen. Die Publikation wird durch ein Peer-Review-Verfahren gehen und in englischer Sprache ver\u00f6ffentlicht.
