URNFIELD – The urnfield phenomenon in Denmark and Northern Germany
Danish-German Network Project
Zentrum für Baltische und Skandinavische Archäologie (ZBSA) and Museum Sønderjylland, Arkæologi Haderslev investigate the Pre-Roman Iron Age urnfield phenomenon in the German-Danish border region in a new research project.
The urnfield grave was the dominant form of burial around 2,500 years ago and huge burial fields with hundreds, sometimes-even thousands, of urn graves have been excavated in the border area. An aim of the URNFIELD network is to investigate the urnfield phenomenon with a special focus on similarities and differences across the border area. The public will be involved through field lectures, open excavation of a Danish urnfield and publications, all in order to strengthen the historical sense of Danish-German unity.
Lead Partner ZBSA (Helene Agerskov Rose), Project Partner Museum Sønderjylland
