The CRC 1266, „Scales of Transformation – Human-Environment Interaction in Prehistoric and Archaic Societies“ , investigates from a long-term perspective the transformation processes in diversely structured societies and their attendant ecological conditions between the fifteenth and first millennia BC. During this period, there were major developments in the history of mankind, which took mankind from the Palaeolithic base camps on the edge of the ice shield to the proto-state structures as found in cities of the Aegean.
The development stages in this process were very different, depending on the period and the region, but always involved repeated transformations. “Transformation” is defined as processes that led to substantial and permanent reorganisations of the socio-economic patterns of interaction between man and the environment. Such transformations can be identified in their various chronological, geographical and social dimensions. Consequently, the CRC examines the excellent archaeological and palaeo-ecological archives pertaining to the various geographical areas with different social constellations, from the Mediterranean to the North Sea and from the Stone Age hunting camp to the early city. In order to identify and interpret the socio-ecological dimension of transformations, combinations of archaeological and palaeo-ecological methods are employed and constantly refined.
This joint project links the ZBSA with transdisciplinary-organised activities in eight institutes of the Christian-Albrechts-University in Kiel (Geography, Earth Sciences, Clinical Molecular Biology, Ecosystems Research, IT, Prehistory and Early History, Classical Archaeology and Philosophy), the Johanna-Mestorf Academy, and the Museum for Archaeology at Schloss Gottorf.
